Miele Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly

   Miele dishwashers have three spray arms (lower, upper, and top/third-rack arm on G 7000 models). The nozzle holes in each arm are 1–3 mm in diameter and block easily with mineral deposits, food particles, broken toothpick fragments, or detergent residue. A blocked upper arm produces dirty top-rack dishes; a blocked lower arm produces dirty plates and pots. The arms must be removed and the jets cleared individually. Miele recommends descaling the interior every 4–6 months in hard water areas.

   The Miele filter system (coarse mesh filter + microfilter + flat filter) sits at the bottom of the tub and collects food particles from the wash water. When the filter is overloaded, dirty water recirculates through the wash circuit and re-deposits food onto dishes.    Miele dishwashers require a minimum dynamic water pressure of 0.5 bar (7 psi) at the inlet. Underfilling results in all three spray arms receiving insufficient water flow to clean effectively. The inlet hose screen filter (located at the back of the machine where the water supply connects) can be removed and cleaned easily.

   If the detergent dispenser door does not open during the main wash phase, detergent is never released into the wash water. This produces dishes that are visibly wet but still coated in grease and food film — as if no detergent was used at all. The dispenser door is spring-loaded and triggered by a wax motor — both can fail. Also check: using too little detergent for the water hardness setting, using non-recommended tablet types (Miele AutoDos machines are calibrated for Miele PowerDisk or UltraTab detergents), or detergent tablets stuck inside the dispenser.

   The circulation pump pressurises water through the spray arms at sufficient velocity to remove food. A partially failing pump (worn impeller, scaled bearings) delivers reduced water pressure to the spray arms — the arms rotate and spray, but not with enough force to clean baked-on food or effectively reach the upper rack. Pump failure is usually preceded by a gradual decline in wash quality over 2–3 months before becoming acute. A completely failed pump will trigger a fault code and halt the cycle.
