   Whirlpool dishwashers made after 2010 use a manual-clean filter under the lower spray arm. When it's clogged with food particles and grease, water can't circulate properly. Clean it monthly for best results.

   The upper and lower spray arms have small holes that jet water onto the dishes. These holes clog with mineral deposits and food debris. A cracked arm will lose water pressure and miss large areas of the rack.

   Dishwashers need incoming water at 120°F (49°C) to dissolve detergent properly and remove grease. If your water heater is set too low, or the heating element in the dishwasher is failing, dishes won't get clean.

1. 1Remove the lower rack. Twist out the filter assembly (usually a quarter-turn counterclockwise) and lift out the mesh screen beneath it. Rinse both under warm water, scrubbing with a soft brush to remove grease and food. Reinstall firmly.
2. 2Remove the lower and upper spray arms (usually unscrew counterclockwise or pull off). Use a toothpick to clear each spray hole. Hold each arm up to the light — all holes should be open. Rinse and reattach.
