Using SharkBite on polybutylene is not recommended even if the OD matches — poly-b degrades internally and the grab ring can damage the softened pipe wall.
I tightened the threaded joint as much as I could and it still drips — what now?
Stop tightening — overtightening a threaded joint, especially brass into brass or brass into CPVC, cracks the fitting. The issue is that the threads are worn, corroded, or the old sealant is still on the threads. Disassemble the joint completely, clean all old tape and pipe dope off the threads with a wire brush, and reseal with fresh PTFE tape (4–6 wraps) plus pipe dope compound. If the threads are visibly damaged — stripped, corroded, or cross-threaded — the fitting body must be replaced. A fitting with damaged threads cannot be re-sealed with more tape.
What is the difference between MAP gas and propane for sweating copper pipe?
MAP gas (MAPP or MAP-Pro) burns hotter than propane — approximately 3,730°F versus 2,500°F at the torch tip. For 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch copper supply pipe, either fuel works fine. For 1-inch and larger copper or for tight work areas where you need to heat quickly, MAP gas is preferred because it reaches soldering temperature faster and reduces the risk of the pipe cooling before solder flows. MAP gas cylinders are yellow; propane is blue. Both use the same torch heads. Whichever gas you use, the technique is the same: heat the fitting body (not the solder), and let capillary action pull the solder into the joint.
The joint leaks only when the water pressure is high — is that a different problem?
Pressure-dependent leaks are common in compression fittings and push-fit joints where the seal is marginal. The fitting seals at low static pressure but weeps under flow pressure (which is slightly lower than static) or fails at peak pressure during valve operations. First confirm your supply pressure is within normal range (40–80 PSI) using a pressure gauge at the hose bib — overpressure above 80 PSI stresses every joint in the system. If pressure is normal, a pressure-dependent leak means the joint seal is inadequate and needs to be remade. Do not simply tighten compression fittings further — this crushes the ferrule past its yield point and creates a new failure mode.
