Nest Protect Smoke Detector Offline
The Nest Protect (2nd generation) connects exclusively on 2.4GHz WiFi — it does not support 5GHz bands. If you recently upgraded your router, changed your WiFi password, or switched to a mesh system that renamed or merged your bands, the Nest Protect will lose its WiFi connection and show as offline in Google Home. Factory reset is a last resort — try re-adding it to the app and checking band settings first.

Common Symptoms
- Nest Protect shows 'Offline' in Google Home app
- Nest Protect shows yellow ring during self-test (network issue indicator)
- Nest Protect connected before but offline after router change
- Can't see Nest Protect in Google Home app at all
- Nest Protect app shows 'No connection to your home'
Most Likely Causes
- 1
5GHz Band Only — Nest Protect Requires 2.4GHz
The Nest Protect 2nd generation only connects to 2.4GHz WiFi networks. If your router was changed to 5GHz only, or if a mesh system merged your bands into a single SSID and is pushing the Nest Protect to 5GHz, it will fail to connect. Verify your router has 2.4GHz enabled and broadcast under a separate SSID if needed.
- 2
WiFi Password or Network Name Changed
If the WiFi network SSID or password changed (after a router upgrade or security update), the Nest Protect cannot reconnect. It must be removed from the Google Home app and re-added with the new network credentials.
- 3
Google Home / Nest Account Issue
If the Google account linked to Nest Protect was signed out, the password changed, or a Google Home migration occurred (from legacy Nest app to Google Home), the Nest Protect may show as offline even if WiFi is connected. Re-linking the account resolves this.
- 4
Nest Protect Firmware Bug or Hang
Occasionally, a Nest Protect unit hangs after a firmware update and requires a factory reset to recover. Signs: the device is on 2.4GHz, credentials are correct, but it still shows offline after reboot. The yellow ring indicator during self-test (press the button) confirms a network issue at the device level.

Quick DIY Checks
During the period when Nest Protect is offline, it still functions as a local smoke and CO detector — it will sound an alarm locally if smoke or CO is detected. It just cannot send notifications to your phone. Do not remove it from the ceiling during diagnosis.
If you factory reset the Nest Protect, it will need to be re-added to Google Home before it can send app notifications or participate in Nest Pathlight and Nightly Promise features.
- 1Verify 2.4GHz is available: log into your router admin panel (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Confirm 2.4GHz is enabled and broadcasting a separate SSID from 5GHz. Nest Protect cannot connect to a 5GHz-only network or to a combined SSID if the router is pushing it to 5GHz.
- 2Reboot your router: unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in. After 2 minutes, press the button on the Nest Protect (on the face of the unit) to trigger a self-test. The ring should briefly light white/green if WiFi reconnects. A yellow ring indicates network still not established.
- 3Re-add the Nest Protect in Google Home: open the Google Home app → tap the + (Add) button → Set up device → Works with Google → Nest. Log in with your Google account. Follow prompts to reconnect the Nest Protect to your 2.4GHz network. You don't need to factory reset to do this — just re-add.

- 5Factory reset Nest Protect (last resort): press and hold the button on the front of the Nest Protect for 10 seconds until you hear a beep and the light ring changes. This factory resets the device. You will need to re-add it in the Google Home app from scratch. Note: you lose any historical data associated with the device.

Repair vs Replace
Nest Protect offline events are almost always a router or Google account configuration issue — not hardware failure. Work through 2.4GHz confirmation, re-adding in Google Home, and factory reset before replacing. Hardware failure (sensor or WiFi radio failure) is uncommon in Nest Protect units under 5 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Nest Protect work if it's offline?
- Yes — Nest Protect functions as a standard smoke and CO detector even when offline. It will sound the local alarm if it detects smoke or CO. What it loses when offline: push notifications to your phone, voice alerts through Google Home speakers, and the ability to silence the alarm remotely from the app. The physical test button still works offline.
- Why did my Nest Protect go offline after I upgraded my router?
- Router upgrades are the most common cause of sudden Nest Protect offline events. Three things can break the connection: the new router doesn't broadcast 2.4GHz (Nest Protect is 2.4GHz only), the SSID name changed, or the WiFi password changed. Fix: log into your new router and create a separate 2.4GHz SSID with the same name and password as your old network — the Nest Protect will reconnect automatically. Alternatively, re-add it in the Google Home app with the new network credentials.
