Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Spinning: How to Fix It

Common Symptoms

• Disposal makes a humming sound but the grinding plate doesn't spin
• Disposal completely silent and unresponsive to the switch
• Disposal runs for a few seconds then stops
• Grinding noise followed by the motor stopping
• Water drains slowly through the disposal

Most Likely Causes

   Jammed Flywheel (Most Common)

   A piece of hard food — a bone, fruit pit, or silverware — has lodged between the grinding plate (flywheel) and the shredder ring. The motor tries to run (hence the hum) but can't turn the plate. Use the hex wrench port on the bottom of the unit to manually turn the flywheel free.

   Tripped Thermal Overload (Reset Button)

   If the motor overheats or jams, a thermal overload protector cuts power and the disposal goes completely silent. The reset button is a small red or black button on the bottom center of the disposal unit. Press it firmly until it clicks — this restores power.

   Failed Motor

   If the disposal hums constantly and turning the flywheel with a hex wrench doesn't help, the motor windings may have failed. This is uncommon in units under 8 years old, but if the unit is old and won't clear after unjamming, motor replacement or a new disposal is needed.

Quick DIY Checks

1. 1SAFETY FIRST: turn off the disposal switch and, if possible, unplug the disposal from under the sink (or flip the breaker for the disposal circuit). Never put your hand inside the disposal.
2. 2Locate the hex (Allen) wrench port at the very bottom center of the disposal unit. Insert a 1/4-inch hex key and work it back and forth to free the jammed flywheel. You'll feel it break loose.
3. 3Once the flywheel turns freely with the hex key, use the supplied disposal wrench or tongs to remove any debris from inside the chamber (never use your hand).
